A New Abaceria for Gracia

Designed with: Samantha Guzman

Lost identity

For decades of development, the Barcelona population has been fighting for more integration of parks and greenery in their urban scape. When the Abacería Market closed, what remained was nothing but a giant field of iron, leaving neighbors with a view of industrial trash in their backyard. With powerful voices, the barrio came together to advocate for the opportunity to integrate green into their home.

A solution to all

As a reflection of Antonio Cerda’s plan for Barcelona’s Ensanche (expansion), the new market embraces culture through cuisine, ecology, and art with integration of concert halls, public pools, culinary experiences, and vertical gardens.
